E85 Basics

Why E85?

E85 is a fuel blend of up to 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It's used by flex-fuel vehicles and performance builds where higher ethanol content can support better combustion control. But it's not as simple as just pulling up to a pump — ethanol content varies by location and season, and the cost and range math is different from regular gas.

⚗️
A high-ethanol blend

E85 can contain anywhere from 51% to 83% ethanol depending on the region, pump, and time of year. Winter blends are sometimes lower to support cold starts. The label says E85 — what's actually in the tank can vary.

🔥
Higher knock resistance

Ethanol has a higher octane rating than premium gasoline. In tuned or flex-fuel vehicles, this can allow for more aggressive timing and improved power output. The benefit depends entirely on whether your vehicle is set up to take advantage of it.

📉
Lower range per tank

Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline, so fuel economy typically drops 15–30% on higher blends. A cheaper price per gallon does not always mean a cheaper fill-up — cost per mile is the number that actually matters.

Potential Advantages

  • Higher knock resistance for tuned builds
  • Often lower price per gallon
  • Domestically produced in many regions
  • Can support higher power on compatible vehicles

Real Tradeoffs

  • 15–30% reduction in MPG on full E85
  • Not suitable for all vehicles without modification
  • Ethanol content varies — E85 is not always 85%
  • Fewer stations than regular gasoline

That's where 85Blends helps.

Whether you're running a partial blend or full E85, 85Blends handles the math — so you know exactly what to add, what it'll cost per mile, and whether it makes sense for your next fill-up.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much E85 do I need for E30?
It depends on your tank size and current ethanol level. As a rough guide, for a full tank of regular gas, you typically need to replace about 35–40% of the tank with E85 to reach E30. 85Blends calculates the exact gallons for your specific situation.
How do I calculate an E60 blend?
Open the Blend Calculator, enter your tank size, your current ethanol percentage (usually E0 for pump gas), and set your target to E60. 85Blends instantly shows the exact gallons of E85 and regular gas to add.
Does E85 save money?
Not always. E85 is often cheaper per gallon, but ethanol has less energy than gasoline, so fuel economy drops 15–30% on high blends. The real measure is cost per mile, not cost per gallon. Partial blends like E30 often offer a better cost-per-mile balance.
Where can I find E85 stations?
Use the Station Finder tab in 85Blends. It shows nearby E85 stations on a live map with community-updated prices. You can also save your favorite stations for quick access.
How much MPG do you lose on E85?
Typically 15–30% less MPG on full E85 compared to gasoline, due to ethanol's lower energy density. On partial blends like E30, the MPG penalty is smaller—often 5–10%. 85Blends Fuel Log tracks your real-world MPG over time so you can see the actual impact for your vehicle.
Can my car run E85?
Flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) are factory-rated for E85. Many other vehicles can run partial blends like E30 without modification, but running high ethanol in a non-flex-fuel car without proper tuning can cause issues. Check your owner's manual or consult a tuner for your specific build.

Founder Story
Built by an E85 Enthusiast
Created by someone who actually runs E85 and wanted a better experience for the community.

I drive a 2017 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack and, after finally beginning to modify it, I decided to make the switch to E85 with a flex-fuel kit. The difference in performance completely changed the car and showed me just how capable ethanol blends can be.

As I learned more about E85, I found myself relying on my cousin for advice, searching for stations in my area, and using multiple blend calculators and apps. While there were some helpful tools available, many lacked features I personally wanted and would use every day.

That's what inspired me to create 85Blends.

My goal was to build one app dedicated to the entire E85 experience—helping drivers find nearby stations, calculate custom blends, track fuel usage, set maintenance reminders, and make ethanol easier to understand and use.

One of the biggest reasons behind 85Blends is education. Many owners of flex-fuel vehicles don't even realize E85 is an option for them. I wanted to create something that could help introduce more enthusiasts to ethanol and make getting started less intimidating.

85Blends is still growing, and I have many more ideas and features planned for the future. As the community grows, the app will continue evolving alongside it.
